Whether you live in an apartment or in your home, composting is a great way to easily go green and get something useful out of it. Compost is organic matter of varied composition that has broken down through the process of combining it with a bulking agent, like wood chips or peat to help it rapidly decompose into dark, rich soil like material. When mixed with regular ground soil, compost can help you grow larger and healthier plants and by removing your kitchen scraps and material from your garbage, you reduce the trash you produce and you reduce the methane production from landfills.
According to the EPA, the following items are appropriate for composting:
Black And Decker Lawn Mower
Animal manure
Cardboard rolls
Clean paper
Coffee grounds and filters
Cotton rags
Dryer and vacuum cleaner lint
Eggshells
Fireplace ashes
Fruits and vegetables
Grass clippings
Hair and fur
Hay and straw
Houseplants
Leaves
Nut shells
Sawdust
Shredded newspaper
Tea bags
Wood chips
Wool rags
Yard trimmings
There are several processes by which you can compost. Some people build large phased bins, others use pile systems and row systems. There are also garden composters that stand in your yard and compost at a more accelerated rate. One of the best and easiest to use models is the drum composter.
Drum composters, for example, allows you to actively rotate the compost which increases oxygen and decomposition rates. Essentially, you put the proper kinds of food waste into the drum of the composter and it traps heat which accelerates the process of decomposition. You rotate the drum and the decomposed material can be removed through the output drum, offering rich, dark compost for planting.
Many manufacturers also sell specialized bulking material and natural compost accelerators so you can reach maximum composting efficiency. So this takes care of what you can compost and an easy and contained method of doing it - but what do you do with all the stuff you aren't supposed to put into your compost?
The EPA gives us a list of these items as well - and the reasons why you shouldn't include them in your compost:
Black walnut tree leaves or twigs - Releases substances that might be harmful to plants
Coal or charcoal ash - Might contain substances harmful to plants
Dairy products (e.g., butter, egg yolks, milk, sour cream, yogurt) - Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies
Diseased or insect-ridden plants - Diseases or insects might survive and be transferred back to other plants
Fats, grease, lard, or oils - Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies
Meat or fish bones and scraps - Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies
Pet wastes (e.g., dog or cat feces, soiled cat litter) - Might contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses harmful to humans
Yard trimmings treated with chemical pesticides - Might kill beneficial composting organisms
Now, what you may not know is that a number of these things can be digested even if they can't be composted. What you need is something called the solar digester. The solar digester, which is often in the shape of a solar cone can take raw meat, food waste, dairy products and even organic teas and breads. Using a special accelerator and the heat of the sun (even in winter) the solar cone digests the food waste into water, carbon dioxide and a small residue.
Specifically, the solar cone can break down all of the following:
Fish
Red Meat & Poultry
All Bones
Bread
Fruit including peelings
Vegetables including peelings
Dairy produce
Cooked food scraps
Crushed egg shells
Tea bags
Animal excrement
This reduces your trash waste down to:
Black walnut tree leaves or twigs
Diseased or insect-ridden plants
Yard trimmings treated with chemical pesticides
Fats, grease, lard, or oils
Not bad!
So reduce your trash by 25%, create amazing compost quickly and efficiently in a drum composter for your garden or window boxes, discard smelly meat and dairy products efficiently and feel great about making a contribution towards sustainability and going greener!
