Not everyone is cut out for setting up a lawn cutting business and being self-employed. While many entrepreneurs are highly successful with their businesses, others never quite get it together and end up going back to their day jobs within a year. Here are eight questions to ask yourself before you start doing the research to set up a lawn cutting business.
1) Are you suited to the working environment?
Black And Decker Lawn Mower
Are you happy working outdoors and being 'on the road' every day? As a lawn care business operator you must be prepared to work in hot sun or in cold, rainy conditions.
2) Are you motivated?
Are you somebody who can make things happen if you don't have somebody to answer to at the end of the day? To be successful in lawn care, or any business for that matter you have to be somebody who is self motivated and disciplined.
3) Do you have good organizational skills?
Are you able to organize your schedule, and the schedules of your employees on a daily, weekly and monthly basis? You must become proficient at using tools such as lawn care business software to schedule all business activity.
4) Are you Decisive?
As a small business owner you must be able to make decisions on the spot if necessary. Sometimes you have the luxury of being able to take some time over decisions but other times you may have to make a decision regarding your business at a moments notice.
5) Are you a positive thinker with a strong character?
One of the reasons why such a large number of small businesses fail is due to the fact that business owners can be weak minded and they just have not been persistent enough. There will be times when dozens of potential customers have rejected your proposals and it seems that you will never gain new clients. Successful business realize that if they just keep trying again, again and again, learning from failures and making changes to their approach that success is eventually inevitable.
6) What work will you do?
While all lawn care services offer the basic mowing, edging and blowing services most successful lawn business operators do better by up-selling additional house, lawn and garden services such as landscaping or irrigation systems. Are you prepared to learn a variety of skills?
7) How much do you have to Invest?
This will determine if you start off with a regular push mower or if you can afford to buy a larger commercial mower or 'ride on' mower.
8) Do you have good people skills?
You have to be good at dealing with people if you want to start a lawn cutting business. Dealing with customers, suppliers and employees requires excellent communication skills.
These are just some of the factors that can go a long towards determining if you will be successful by setting up a lawn cutting business. Some come naturally and some can be achieved with time, but all are important if you want to have success and to make a 'six figure' income from lawn care.
